"Sunlight and moonlight,
Daylight and dark
All it took was a look
To ignite the spark...
We slipped away,
Like the sun and the moon,
To talk of the sacred
On that crisp afternoon."
- "The Sun and the Moon," poem by Cara Carroll, The Red Mud Review
The sun and moon have featured in art throughout human history. In many cultures, these celestial objects were deified and worshiped as powerful gods and goddesses.
This concept was later adapted to Catholic iconography, with the pope being represented by the sun and the moon representing secular governments.
The star and crescent is a related symbol. This symbol has been used for over two thousand years for the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, and Islam. It can be seen in ancient carvings and modern flags.

This motif has also been adopted in popular culture. One example is the Pokémon Sun and Moon cartoon and video game franchise.
It can also be seen in clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home decor.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Sun and Moon
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This will outline the sun and moon. Then, draw a curved line through the center of it. At the end of the line, draw a short curved line. These outline the top of the crescent moon as well as its nose.
2. Draw a series of three curved lines to complete the outline of the crescent moon. Then, draw the smiling mouths of both the sun and moon. Note that the moon's mouth extends from a point where the curved lines meet. For each mouth, draw a long curved line with a short line at the corner of the mouth.
3. Use curved lines to draw and contour the sun's closed eye. Use a thick line for the eye itself, and additional lines to outline the upper lid, lower lid, and brow.
4. Draw the moon's closed eye in a similar fashion. Use curved lines for the upper and lower lids, the slit between them, and the brow. Then, draw the first of the sun's rays. Use curved lines to enclose a wavy triangle.
5. Continue drawing the rays of the sun. Draw a short, squat triangle using curved lines. Then, use curved lines to enclose a tall, wavy triangle.
6. Continue the pattern of a short, squat triangle and a tall, wavy triangle. Draw each using curved lines.
7. Draw a "C" shaped line and a horizontal straight line below the moon. This begins the outline of a cloud. Then, use curved lines to enclose the last of the sun's triangular rays. Notice that the final ray is partially hidden by the cloud.
8. Use "U" shaped lines of different sizes to enclose the puffy shape of the cloud. Erase portions of the moon as necessary.
9. Draw another cloud behind the sun and moon. Use a straight line for its base and a series of connected "U" shaped lines for its fluffy top.
Color your cartoon of the sun and moon.
